Text: John 1:6-9, 15, 27 (NIV)

Godly men witness for Jesus

V6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
V15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
V27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

  • John was sent from God. He came as a witness (v7), and not as a baptizer although he was called John the Baptist. His Baptism Ministry served his Witnessing Ministry.
  • John was a humble witness who admitted that Jesus, Who was before him, although He came after him, was greater than him. (v27)
  • Christians, who are godly people, must witness for Jesus. Witness to friends, relatives, schoolmates about Jesus FIRST, then invite them to come to church.

Witness for the Light to believe

V7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
V8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

  • John witnessed for the Light, and he wasn’t the Light, himself. When he was asked: Are you the Messiah? Are you Elijah? Are you the Prophet? Verse 8 says that he came only as a witness to the Light.
  • Light always overcomes darkness. As Jesus is the Source of light, He also made us little lights for Him. So that by making the Light in you to be noticed by other people, then you can witness for the Light (Jesus) to believe in Him.

Witness that Jesus is coming again

V9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
  • Jesus is the only “religious leader” who claims to be coming again.
  • C.S. Lewis’ Trilemma: He could only be one of the three things: He is either a lunatic, a liar, or the Lord. He can’t be all, but only ONE.
  • A lot of people believe that Jesus remained at the Cross or at the tomb. If they knew that Jesus rose again from the dead, they have no idea that Jesus is coming back again.
  • The second coming of Jesus is a big selling point for Christians to witness for Jesus.
